Alcatraz Sydney was conceived as the transformation project of a former bathroom showroom and furniture factory into a fully functioning dual-purpose live music venue and bar. The design approach centred on retaining the industrial heritage of the building while introducing a minimal, materially grounded language that could support a highly dynamic events space, designed to shift seamlessly between everyday hospitality and live performance.

To support the venue’s dual usage, custom acoustic and sound treatment solutions were at the forefront of the brief, and meaningfully integrated into the design using the project’s core material palette. Working with steel, reclaimed hardwood and rammed earth, the space was shaped not just for atmosphere, but for function —— balancing durability, flexibility and sonic performance within a highly adaptable spatial framework.
